Our Story

Our first panel at the 2020 SCS/AIA Annual Meeting!

Our first panel at the 2020 SCS/AIA Annual Meeting!

We are a group of Asian and Asian American students and scholars of classical antiquity interested in studying the reception of the classical tradition in contemporary Asian and Asian American culture and committed to increasing the diversity of the field of Classics.  We came together during and in the immediate wake of the 2019 AIA/SCS Annual Meeting in San Diego, feeling that we needed a stronger sense of community as Asian and Asian American classicists.

Our Mission

The Asian and Asian American Classical Caucus is a professional organization that fosters the interests of students and scholars of classical antiquity who identify as Asian and Asian American by

  1. promoting scholarship that explores issues of classical reception in Asian and Asian American culture; and

  2. striving to bring together the vibrant community of Asian and Asian American classicists.

We welcome the support of our allies from different backgrounds and look forward to collaborating with other organizations that share our vision of an equitable future for the field.

Recognition

The Asian and Asian American Classical Caucus is an affiliated group with the Society for Classical Studies.

In January 2021, The Asian and Asian American Classical Caucus was awarded Women’s Classical Caucus’s 2021 Professional Equity Award for “an institution that has taken measures to improve equality and diversity in our field, who whose culture is a model for other institutions.”
